Increased investments and development carded for indigenous communities -PM Phillips

Prime Minister Mark Phillips has promised increased investments and development in Indigenous villages to push sustainability and self determination, even as he reminded of the progress made in pushing hinterland development in the last five years.

Speaking at a cultural event to mark the launch of Amerindian Heritage month on Monday evening, the Prime Minister said unprecedented opportunities are carded for Indigenous people and communities across the country.

“As we celebrate this legacy and rich heritage, we must also look forward with a collective commitment to building a future of unprecedented opportunities, prosperity and self determination for our indigenous people and their communities across our ten administrative regions,” the Prime Minister said.

He said the Government’s agenda is to ensure that no community is left behind. To this end, PM Phillips said that the plans outlined by the government for hinterland development are not just promises but are a comprehensive, actionable strategy that will see real changes for the country’s indigenous population.

“Our vision is one where every village is empowered, every voice is heard and every community thrives. Our Indigenous peoples are the custodians of Guyana’s vast and pristine forests for generations you have lived with profound with this environment, employing traditional knowledge and sustainable practices that have been fundamental to the preservation of this global asset,” the Prime Minister said.

He also charged the indigenous communities to remain primary guardians for the environment, saying that their roles are crucial in the global fight against climate change.

“It is therefore not only just and equitable that you our Indigenous brothers and sisters directly receive significant share of the process generated from the sale of carbon credits under the Low Carbon Development Strategy. This is not a handout, but rightful benefit sharing mechanism for your vital role in conversation. And to that end, you our Indigenous brothers and sisters can be assured that going forward, you will receive no 15% of all carbon credit revenues, a commitment that ensures your communities are directly invested in and rewarded,” the Prime Minister stated.

It was also explained that the Amerindian Land titling and demarcation process will be advanced by the Government in the next five years.
