The Ministry of the Presidency has announced that pursuant to powers under Article 188(2) of the Constitution, President David Granger has granted a Presidential Pardon to one (1) woman prisoner, whom he considered fit and proper to receive such pardon.
The Presidential Pardon is effective from today in observance of the 52nd Independence Anniversary of the country.
The woman prisoner being pardoned is from the New Amsterdam Prison and has been identified as 30-year-old Shremattie Singh.
She has been serving time behind bars on a conviction of false pretence.
The President’s office said it is expected that the expression of compassion and humanity by the President will result in the prisoner reuniting with her family and leading a good and useful life.
Last year the President also pardoned a number of other women prisoners who had served a portion of their sentences for non violent crimes.
