Irfaan Ali stands by academic qualifications and declares himself “an honest candidate”

The Presidential Candidate for the People’s Progressive Party, Irfaan Ali, today declared that he is an “honest candidate” and all of his qualifications are authentic and could be verified.

Since being elected to the position of Presidential Candidate by his party, questions have swirled about the academic qualifications for the former Housing Minister under the PPP.

At a press conference today, Ali appeared eager to bring an end to the questions about his qualification, claiming that all of his qualifications are available for anyone to see.

“I have seen persons trying to use my qualifications as a political football…As I said before, every single one of my certificates have been put out there. Every one of them I stand by. Those are my qualifications. I am in the process of completing my PHD and I am also pursuing an LLM in International Commercial Law and when those are completed, I will put them out there”, the Presidential Candidate said.

Ali dodged questions on what qualifications he would have obtained before moving on to obtain an online Masters degree from an Indian University without a first degree.

He was a student of the University of Guyana, but did not complete his studies there.

All of the other programmes he reportedly pursued to build up his qualifications were the product of online studies.

There are reports that some of the programmes that he said he completed could not have been done as online programmes.

Questioned about the authenticity of the online programmes, Ali repeatedly stated that his qualifications are certificates “are out there”.

He said he has placed his transcripts on his Facebook page and those transcripts should still be available in the public space.

Asked whether he is comfortable as a Presidential Candidate with all of the questions being raised about the authenticity of qualifications, Mr. Ali said “I am an honest candidate, secondly I am very comfortable with my qualifications”.

He said with that comfort, his focus will be to ensure a PPP victory at the next elections.
