“IsWe” pleads guilty to murder of girlfriend; Sentencing to be handed down in two weeks

Dressed in a neatly pressed grey suit with black shirt and tie, Linden resident, Shaquawn “IsWe” Alleyne, stood before Justice Sandil Kissoon this morning and pleaded guilty to the March 2021 murder of his girlfriend, Shonnette Dover, as the start of the murder trial was set to begin.

Alleyne appeared emotionless as he entered the guilty plea, according to persons who were in the Court at the time.

The man told the Court that he understood his guilty plea and had read and fully understood the charge that he was facing.

The Court accepted the plea, but also instructed that a psychological evaluation be completed and that reports from the Prison Service be furnished the Court before sentencing is handed down on the 17th June.

The Prosecution team has also been ordered to provide victim impact statements to the Court ahead of sentencing.

Alleyne was charged in March 2024 for the murder of the girlfriend after being on the run for almost three years. He was arrested in Suriname and handed over to the Guyanese authorities who had an active wanted bulletin for his arrest.

The girlfriend, Shonnette Dover, was 21-years-old at the time of her brutal murder. She had been shot to the head and buried in the backyard of the home that she shared with Alleyne.

Initially, Alleyne had reported the young girl as missing and even led a search operation across Linden along with some of the young woman’s own family and other relatives.

When investigators eventually decided to search the backyard as part of their probe, Alleyne disappeared. Dover’s body was found buried in a shallow grave.

The motive behind the murder remains unclear. A teenage relative of the dead woman, who was visiting the home at the time of the murder, was arrested and questioned about the incident.

The entire country was gripped by the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s murder back in 2021, the investigations, the discovery of the body and the boyfriend who went on the run before being caught in Suriname after almost three years after the murder.
