Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has denied that the Government had any involvement in the demolition of the People’s National Congress’ Region 9 office, although he maintains that the building was being illegally occupied by the Opposition party.
At a press conference today, the Vice President said the building really belongs to the state, although it has been occupied by the PNC for the last 47 years. He said the Government did not give any directive to the REO to demolish the opposition party’s office.
“Let me make it clear, there was no direction on the part of the People’s Progressive Party to have APNU evicted from the building that they were illegally occupying. There was no direction from the central government to have this done. This was done at the regional level pursuant to the job that the REO have at the technical level,” Jagdeo said.
Jagdeo said he is sure that contrary to the PNC’s claims that it has documents to prove that it is the rightful owner of the property, no such documents exist.
He said the government is open to issuing a plot of land to the PNC Reform in the Lethem town for it to construct a new office once it goes through the correct channels.
“APNU if they want, they can easily apply for a piece of land, and we maybe willing to give them the land in Lethem if they want to build an office but it must be done properly on land that they own,” Mr. Jagdeo noted.
The PNCR has deemed the demolition of its property as a declaration of war by the PPP/C government.
The Party said all of its records, documentation and reports containing membership information have disappeared while office equipment, tools and other material have been destroyed.
The party has updated the diplomatic community on the development.
