Former President Bharrat Jagdeo who leads the People’s Progressive Party in parliament as the Opposition Leader has shot down reports that there is a rift between himself and the current General Secretary of the party, Clement Rohee.
Reports have surfaced that moves may be afoot by some in the PPP to have Mr. Rohee replaced as the General Secretary of the party. Rohee moved up to that position in 2013, two years after Donald Ramotar became President.
Mr. Ramotar served as General Secretary for over a decade.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Jagdeo said he has full confidence in Mr. Rohee as General Secretary of the PPP. He said the party remains united although he suspects that reports of a rift between the two may be coming from someone else for personal reasons.
“I have full confidence in Clement Rohee. Clement Rohee is a valuable member of the party and I think these generated scandals and conspiracies are done for a purpose and we have been on the receiving end of this for over a decade, so we have grown thick skin to these conspiracies…I know the reason why this is being generated at this time. It has to do with private motive”, Mr. Jagdeo noted.
The General Secretary is seen as the Leader of the party. There have been reports from many close to the PPP that although the party appears to be supportive of Rohee as General Secretary, there might be the need for an infusion of younger blood into the party’s leadership.
Rohee has been a member of the PPP for over 50 years.
