Jagdeo says citizens already benefiting from oil resources; Claims cost of living on the decline

Still upset over the line of questioning the Government faced during its recent appearance before the United Nations Human Rights Committee, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday said the Government has been moving to address many of the issues raised, while others have already been addressed.

One of the issues raised by the UN Human Rights Committee was the need for the equal distribution of the country’s oil resources wealth. Mr. Jagdeo believes that issue should not have been raised, since according to him, all Guyanese are already benefitting from the oil resources.

“Not all over the country people are benefitting directly, but indirectly the entire country is benefitting because there are more jobs now, more infrastructure project, hospitals and more of everything that we are building,” Mr. Jagdeo said.

Mr. Jagdeo said the PPP government is no longer afraid of defending its track record, whether here in Guyana or abroad. He said the the Government’ s management of the oil sector and ensuring that Guyanese benefit cannot be overlooked.

“We are moving to ensure that our people benefit more from this and they do benefit with an expanded economy more disposable income, so when people have jobs, they can spend more, and buy from greens from the farmers, because some people believe that farmers must work hard and supply them constantly with cheap vegetables their whole lives, their income going up—but the farmers must not get more income for their vegetables etc,” Mr. Jagdeo noted.

When questioned about additional measures to address the rise in the cost of living, the Vice President said prices have been on the decline.

“Now, the prices have even in some areas come down from the COVID period, you just take a few items like cooking oil. I look at the prices during the COVID era, it skyrocketed 200% in some areas. Its a comparative, so we are fearing much better than others,” the Vice President noted.

Across the country, there continues to be an outcry over the rise in the cost of living, especially with local and imported food products.
