Former Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, retired Major General Joe Singh has been appointed as the Special Assistant to the President of Guyana.
The high-profile appointment took effect from March 1, 2013 but has been kept relatively low-key by the Government of Guyana. There has been no official announcement but Major General Singh confirmed the appointment to News Source on Monday.
In an interview with News Source, Major General Singh said “I am honoured to serve the country and to use whatever experience and knowledge I have gained over the years to impact Guyana and the citizens of Guyana”. He said the appointment is a “non-political appointment” and his tasks and duties are not confined to any one specific area.
Since the appointment two months ago, the retired Chief of Staff has been working out of the Office of the President.
Major General (Ret.) Joe Singh has served in a number of key positions in both the public and private sector. He was once the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission but resigned from that post just after the 2001 General Elections. He also served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company for a number of years.
Less than three years after his retirement from GT&T, he was called back to that company to act in the same capacity when the CEO who replaced him, resigned. He served as the Acting CEO of GT&T up until January of this year.
Mr. Singh also served as the Executive Director of Conservation International-Guyana for a number of years.
In 2012, he served briefly as the Chairman of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission. He resigned from that post after the Miners’ Groups raised concern about his appointment to that position and threatened a boycott of GGMC activities.
The retired Army Chief is well-respected for his knowledge of all things Guyana especially the interior and hinterland districts.
He has the distinction of having served as the Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force under five Presidents of Guyana.
