Jubilee Youth Village Opens at Durban Park

As Guyana begins the celebration of its 50th Republic anniversary, the “Golden Jubilee Youth Village” opened this morning at Durban Park.

The event will run until Saturday evening and has brought together non-governmental organizations, youth groups, and government agencies showcasing the work of Guyanese youth.

Youth entrepreneurs are also showcasing their products and services at the event and youth entertainers will be featured at the main concert.

At the opening this morning, Minister of Social Cohesion Dr. George Norton noted that the Government of Guyana remains committed to the nation’s youth and their development.

“The setting up if this youth village was done deliberately and intentionally to showcase the incredible cadre of young Guyanese who will inherit the mission of building this already great nation. This youth village provides a forum ideally shaped to recognize and celebrate the achievements, talents, ingenuity, and scope of our young people throughout the length and breadth of Guyana. Youth Village is a statement to the world that young Guyanese are ready, they are intelligent, capable and truly committed to taking this nation to new heights”, Norton said.

The Nation’s young people are being encouraged to advance themselves so that they can better be able to advance the country.

That point was reiterated by Youth Activist Ronald Austin (Jr), who spoke extensively on Guyana’s history.

He said young people who want to be in leadership need to advance themselves and must be able to bring something else to the table and not just their age.

Austin said, “I want to say to the youth who are there in the stands, I hope you are hearing. We must disabuse ourselves from the notion that the only thing we are required to bring to the leadership table is youth. Good leadership demand character, it demands honesty, it demands integrity. You cannot come to the leadership table and say, forget what I have done, forget my track record; you must select me because I am a youth.”

With several organizations present, visitors were able to view displays covering several issues including robotics.

One of the students who attended the event, Sharkene Phillipi from the Golden Grove Secondary School expressed said “my experience here was good, going to the booths and seeing different things , writing your names and so on.”

She went on to explain that she hoped this initiative continues next year.

On Saturday, the youth village will culminate with a grand stage performance from local and international artists including Brandon Harding, Timeka Marshall, KI and Rupee.
