Labour Ministry investigators visit scene of artificial island fatal accident

Officials from the Ministry of Labour, who are probing the death of a Venezuelan worker at the Vreed-en-hoop shore base facility construction site, visited the scene on Monday as part of their investigations.

36-year-old Venezuelan national, Rusbel Azocar, died on Saturday evening after he fell into a hole at the construction site on the artificial island on the Demerara river.

During the visit by the Labour Ministry officials, they met with management and other employees and asked a number of questions pertaining to the incident and the safety systems that should be in place at the worksite.

The company listed the man’s occupation as a Health and Safety helper. However, the investigating team reportedly questioned company officials about that job title and the man’s responsibilities at the worksite.

He was reportedly placing a barrier around the hole with water on the southern half of the site quay wall when he suddenly fell into the hole.

He was not wearing a life vest at the time of the incident.

Following the tragic death, the company has suspended construction operations in the area briefly.

The artificial island is being built as part of the shore base facilities for the oil and gas sector.
