Venezuelan worker falls into hole and dies on artificial island worksite

A 36-year-old Venezuelan national, who was working as a Health and Safety Helper at the artificial island construction site at Vreed-en-hoop lost his life on Saturday night when he reportedly fell into a hole and drowned.

The Ministry of Labour and the Police are leading the investigations into the death of Rusbel Jesus Rengel Azocar. A report of the incident stated the man, who was attached to Gas Total Solution, was placing a barrier around a hole with water on the southern half of the site quay wall when he suddenly fell into the hole.

He was not wearing a life vest at the time of the incident. The Labour Ministry in a press statement said it is mandatory for persons to wear life jackets on the worksite in the area.

Since the tragic death, the company has suspended construction operations, as the investigation has been launched.

The artificial island is being built as part of the shore base facilities for the oil and gas sector.

Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, has expressed growing concern over injuries and accidents which occur on the job site.

The OSH department has reiterated the importance of persons and companies adhering to workplace health and safety regulations to mitigate the likelihood of workplace accidents.
