The family of 26-year-old Linden teacher, Jenel Pollydore, who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend on Saturday night, believe the Guyana Police Force failed to protect the young woman, despite her repeated complaints about the man’s threats even after she obtained a restraining order against him.
The ex-boyfriend, 21-year-old Shaka Phillips, has since admitted to the murder, according to the Police.
In a statement this morning, the Guyana Police Force said that during questioning, Phillips who was arrested on Sunday afternoon, told investigators that he shot Pollydore twice outside a wedding reception at a Linden Hotel.
The Police said the man told investigators that the two got into an argument over her refusal to answer his calls and he whipped out a gun from a bag and shot her once, then chased after her and shot her again as she sought refuge in the compound of the hotel.
The Police said the man said he left the scene and dumped the gun near one of the boat landings into the Demerara river.
The murder suspect is expected in Court as early as Tuesday or Wednesday to face the murder charge.
Relatives of the dead woman told rights activist and ALP Leader, Simona Broomes on Sunday that the Police did not do enough to protect the woman from her threatening ex-boyfriend.
They said after she secured a restraining order against him, he would still visit her home and make threats outside her bedroom window. When the woman visited the Police to inform them that the ex-boyfriend was flouting the restraining order, the family said she was quizzed about her looks and why the couple broke up.
They said the Police made no effort to arrest the man before the murder.
The two, who shared a 4 month old child together, lived briefly together. But after the man became abusive, the woman ended the relationship, according to relatives and forced him to leave her family’s home.
They said since then, she was bombarded by threats and repeatedly expressed her fears to the Police.
She had confided in friends that she took a decision to end the relationship and asked him to leave her family’s home weeks ago, as she became tired of his abuse and almost daily arguments.
In a statement, the Police confirmed that the 26-year-old was shot twice. A post mortem examination is to be performed on her body. The Police also reported that two 9mm spent shells were recovered from the scene.
