Alert Police and Prison Officers attached to the Lusignan Prison thwarted what appeared to be an attempt to get illegal items into the prison early this morning.
According to a Police statement, at around 1 o’ clock this morning, Police and Prison personnel manning the eastern towers of the Lusignan Prison, heard “crashing sounds” emanating from the bushes and shortly after observed a man, who was wearing a hoodie emerging from the area.
A “warning shot” was fired and the man reportedly fled back into the thick vegetation, where he escaped.
The area was immediately combed and while the man could not be found, three bags with several items were found in the bushy area.
The items found included 140 packets of cigarettes, 4 cellular phones, 11 lighters, 1 power pack, 1 ear piece along with a phone charger, 15 packets of small-sized zip lock bags and
and one thousand seven hundred and ninety-four (1,794) grams of marijuana.
An investigation has been launched. A few weeks ago, there was another attempt to get illegal items into the same prison. An empty bag was found after it was allegedly thrown over the fence.
Investigations are ongoing.
