Magistrate sets December 3 for ruling on Gary Best’s no-case submission in causing death trial

Magistrate Rhondel Weever has announced that she will make a ruling on the 3rd December on whether to accept the no-case submission put forward by the Attorney for retired GDF Chief of Staff Gary Best in the causing death trial.

Best is on trial for causing the death of national cyclist Jude Bentley in a road accident earlier this year.

His Attorney, Nigel Hughes, wants the Court to throw out the case. However, the Prosecution believes that it has made out its case and the accused ought to be called upon to lead a defence.

Best, who is also a former Presidential Adviser, has pleaded not guilty to the charge. He is accused of driving his motor vehicle in a manner that was dangerous to the public and which caused the death of the cyclist.

The accident took place in the early morning hours of February 8, 2020 while Best was reportedly heading home and the cyclist was on a practice ride.

Best is facing separate charges in relation to driving under the influence of alcohol. He has also pleaded not guilty in that case and that trial is also ongoing.
