A man of unsound mind, who reportedly went berserk and attacked a number of persons at Mahaicony on the East Coast of Demerara and a 68-year-old man who was trying to subdue him were both shot dead by the Police this morning.
The Guyana Police Force said its Office of Professional Responsibility is probing the matter.
According to a Police statement, ranks responded to a report of a known drug addict of unsound mind, Roger Pierre, stabbing 63-year-old Mahaicony resident, Laldat Tooknauth. The injured man was taken to the hospital, and the Police said when ranks arrived on the scene, the suspect was spotted brandishing a knife as he walked along the roadway.
Efforts by the Police to disarm and arrest the man were met with resistance and he was shot in his left foot by one of the ranks.
The man reportedly continued to walk away from the Police with his knife in hand and as the Police ranks followed, he started to throw bottles and other objects at the Police and other residents. The injured man reportedly attacked another resident of the area, stabbing him to his left hand before continuing his walk along the roadway with the Police behind him.
The Police said the man was eventually pursued by a number of residents from the area and one of the residents, 68-year-old Frederick Williams, managed to tackle the man to the ground to subdue him.
The Police said during the altercation, the drug addict mounted the elderly man and started to stab him to his head and other parts of the body.
The two Police ranks who were monitoring the situation opened fire in the direction of the suspect, but hit both the suspect and the man who was attempting to subdue him multiple times to their bodies.
Both men were rushed to the Mahaicony hospital, where the elderly man died while receiving medical attention, and his attacker was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Police said the bodies of the two men were examined and both displayed gunshot wounds, while the elderly man had sustained multiple stab injuries to his head and body.
The Police investigators have been canvassing surveillance video recordings from the area and the matter is being probed by the Office of Professional Responsibility.
