(PIX11)  EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn — The man accused of fatally shooting a 16-year-old girl in Brooklyn is in custody Thursday night, police say.

Police tell PIX11 News that 24-year-old Taariq Stephens turned himself in Thursday evening.

A photo and surveillance video was released earlier in the day of the man they believe fired the shot that killed Shemel Mecurius in front of her 3-year-old cousin in Brooklyn

The 16-year-old victim was babysitting her cousin when she was shot three times. Her aunt said she lived long enough to identify her killer.

Mecurius moved to New York from Guyana three years ago to “have a better life,” and lived with her aunt, who was her primary caregiver.

The teen, who attended Edward R. Murrow High School, often cared for her young cousin and told Pryce she planned on becoming a nurse.

As for a motive in the slaying, that has not been determined.
