Police investigators have launched a probe into the death of a 36-year-old truck driver who drove overboard at the John Fernandes wharf in the city.

The dead man has been identified as Sheldon Wilson of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.

Surveillance video recordings of the incident captured the truck being driven slowly towards the edge of the wharf before its cabin eventually went off the edge, crashing into the river.

Fast thinking workers at the wharf rushed to the driver’s aid and took a while before they were able to pull him from the wreckage.

He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sources familiar with the investigations have told News Source that it is suspected that the driver either suffered a seizure or possible heart attack before he drove over the edge to his death.

A post-mortem examination has been ordered as part of the investigations.
