Shipping and Logistic Companies, Muneshwers Limited and John Fernandes Limited have joined forces and have commissioned Guyana’s first Mobile Harbour Cranes, through their joint venture company, Cranes Guyana Inc.
Mobile harbor cranes are used to load and unload cargo from ships at ports. Prior to the launching of the company, ships would have had to come with their own cranes to Guyana for offloading purposes.
Director of the Company, Phillip Fernandes, said the new joint venture company will change the way the port facilities have been doing business in Guyana.
“This we see as big win for Guyana, because it is marked improvement to what we have always had.
The project was funded by the IDB and according to another Director, Mr. Robin Muneshwer, although the two companies have been competing in the same business space, they recognize that there was a gap needed to be filled.
“We each recognise that there was a common good that is bigger than anyone of us, yet still cognisant of our desires to maintain our separate identities and culture. A common good also in the national interest, this is a first for the shipping community and a lesson for the private sector of Guyana,” Mr. Muneshwer said.
President Irfaan Ali who delivered the feature address said that there needs to be more private sector collaborations in the shipping and logistics sector.

He acknowledged that this is new terrain for local businesses to navigate, with many of them having never been exposed to such high-level partnership and growth opportunities.
“It is time for our local companies to embrace a new mindset one that encourages them to think bigger, act bolder and grow together. The rapid growth of our oil and gas sector and other sectors of our country demands a shift in perspective no longer can businesses operate in isolation or remain content with small scale operations, now is the time to graduate to larger entities to build consortium and to form strategic partnerships with local and foreign firms,” the President noted.
The President also promised incentives for businesses willing to invest in the sector, noting that the success of the transportation sector, would translate into the country’s success.
A new wharf facility was built at the Muneshwer’s wharf to accommodate the new cranes. The total investment stands at US$14 million.
