Murder fugitive arrested moments before his wedding

A fugitive who was on the run for the past 20 years and was wanted for the murder of his wife, was arrested on Saturday afternoon just before he got the chance to say I do to a new wife.

51-year-old Jerome Fernandes was nabbed on  Saturday afternoon after Police investigators received a tip-off about his whereabouts.

Fernandes was wanted for the 2002 murder of his wife Roshinie Sooklall.  The murder took place at Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara.

He was arrested in his wedding suit at Onderneeming on the Essequibo Coast.  The man did not put up a fight when he was surrounded by the Police and has since been cooperating with them about the 2002 murder of his wife.

Although Fernandes was on the run since 2002, he managed to get registered and received a national ID card in 2020 without raising any suspicion.
