Murder suspect found dead in Police lock-ups

Hours after confessing that he was responsible for the murder of his wife, 44-year-old West Coast Demerara resident, Hemat Kumar Mohamed, was found dead in the lock-ups of the Leonora Police Station.

Mohamed was arrested last Friday after his wife, Shavannie Hanoman, was found dead in a canal in the area. The woman’s body bore multiple wounds and the husband confessed to the crime after he was arrested. He was expected to face the Court in this new week.

In a statement this morning, the Guyana Police Force said the suspect was found hanging from a window grill within the lock-ups of the Leonora Police Station on Saturday morning.

The Police said he was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. The Police claim that the man reportedly used a piece of his own clothing to take his own life.

Meanwhile, the Office of Professional Responsibility has launched an investigation into the death of the suspect in Police custody.
