A 25-year-old man who was being held at the Beterverwaghting Police Station on suspicion of break and enter and larceny was found dead yesterday afternoon in the police station’s lockups.
The dead man’s name has been given as Julian Harrison of La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara.
A police report late last evening said he was found hanging in the lock-ups of the station. The man was arrested earlier yesterday and placed in the lockups as a probe was being conducted into allegations of break and enter and larceny.
The Guyana Police Force in its statement did not offer any details on the investigations or complaints that led to the man’s arrest but claimed that at the time that he was found dead, he was the only person being held in the lock-ups.
The police suspect that he may have taken his own life.
A post-mortem examination is to be performed on the man’s body and an investigation has been launched into his death.
