An exchange of gunfire between police and armed men on Thursday afternoon has left one man dead.
A number of other men have been arrested. The dead man has been identified as Nigel Joseph. There are no other available details about him.
The shootout started at a hotel in Ogle on the East Coast of Demerara around 5:00pm when Police attempted to carry out an operation to break up a drug trafficking transaction.
Police officers had been tipped off that there was a major drug transaction taking place at the hotel.
When the police arrived and attempted to arrest the suspects, gunfire erupted and that forced the officers to run for cover, while returning fire.
One of the suspects was shot and later succumbed at the Georgetown Hospital. Over 10 pounds of cocaine was seized as the police took control of the situation and arrested the other suspects. Firearms were also recovered and one of those firearms is reportedly linked to a private security company that operates mainly in the mining areas.
