Declaring that the Opposition, APNU+AFC can never be trusted, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall urged the electorate to judge the parties contesting the 2025 Elections based on their track record in Government.
During his contribution to the Budget debate on Thursday, Mr. Nandlall said electoral politics are based on trust and track record. He said Guyanese should remember the aftermath of the last general elections.
“All of you would have read about the 2020 elections and the multiple attempts to rig those elections. I am so happy that 2020 came to refresh your memories. And, what was different about the 2020 elections is that it was recorded on social media, so everything that they did was streamed live across the globe. You could have been in your home, and you would have seen them in their multiple attempts to rig,” he said.
In a campaign style debate contribution, the Attorney General said the APNU+AFC failed to deliver during its time in office.
On Constitutional reform, the Attorney General said the Coalition had promised to initiate the process of constitutional reform within the first 100 days in office by appointing a Constitutional Reform Commission.
He said instead, it appointed a Steering Committee.
“The APNU+AFC will immediately appoint a constitutional reform commission, you are bright people, consisting of representatives of all stakeholders, trade unions, the private sector, religious and faith-based organisations, women, youth, professional organization and the university. Its mandate would be to undertake the urgent tasks of fashioning a comprehensive reform for the constitution…and guess what they did? They appointed what they called a steering committee headed by one Nigel Hughes, the Leader of the AFC, to head a group of about four persons – Geeta Chandan, Hasyln Parris and two other token appointments – and they $20M to this group,” he said.
Nandlall said Guyanese should be wary of promises from the coalition, since the group is not known to fullfill those promises. He said Budget 2025 is a transformational budget that will see benefits being spread across the country.
