With several countries in the region affected by the US President’s Executive Order, which has frozen financial aid to other countries, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has indicated that he has not received any reports as yet about Guyana being affected.
News Source understands that a number of programmes that fall under USAID are likely to be affected by the US President’s order.
Neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago which has benefited from training programmes with the US military, has already been notified that some of its training programmes have been cancelled.
“We have not received any report about any aid being frozen to Guyana not it affecting us and I spoke with the President and the Finance Minister and there is no such report at this point in time about any of their policy globally affecting Guyana,” the Vice President stated.
The new US policy will affect all countries which have been beneficiaries of US grant-aided programmes.
The Vice President said he is confident following a call between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Irfaan Ali last week, that relations and cooperation between the two countries will be expanded.
“In fact, in the conversation that President Ali had with the Secretary of State, they spoke about enhanced cooperation between the two countries, in various areas including in the energy sector and we are really grateful and thankful for the support of the U.S government in reaffirming its strong support on the Venezuela border issue,” Mr. Jagdeo stated.
The United States provides aid to Guyana in many areas, including health, security, and economic development. The US also provides military training to the Guyana Defence Forces (GDF).
