Nandy Park and Republic Park swamped with flood waters after koker breaks

Residents of Nandy Park and Republic Park on the East Bank of Demerara woke up to flooded streets and yards early on Thursday morning after a koker in the area reportedly fell apart and allowed the high tide waters of the Demerara River to flow into the areas.

The Peter’s Hall community has also been affected by the early morning flood waters.

Residents said the flood waters started rushing in just after 4 o’ clock on Thursday morning leaving them stunned. Some residents claimed that there was as much as 8 inches of water in some yards and in some streets.

Many of the residents have been forced to lock themselves in. One resident said she has never seen anything of the sort. Some flat houses were flooded out and residents called for immediate help.

The Drainage and Irrigation Authority has been notified of the incident.
