National Commission on Disabilities launches multi-year strategic plan

The National Commission on Disabilities (NCD) launched it’s National Strategic Plan 2025-2029 at the Pegasus Suites with Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony indicating that the Government is continuously putting measures in place to improve the lives of persons living with disabilities.

According to Minister Anthony, the Ministry of Health is expanding the physiotherapy and audiology services across the country.

“We have also extended physiotherapy to all regions of Guyana and we have staff now that are working in every region of Guyana to provide physiotherapy to the patients who need it. And that’s something we continue to build on. But we also recognize that there will be a percentage of patients that would require some additional treatment and for those who require those additional treatment, the ministry, the Government, is currently in the process of designing and constructing a neurological center where people who require these kinds of specialized treatment would be able to go there and get this type of treatment,” Minister Anthony said.

He said to address the mobility challenge experienced by some persons, the Government distributed more than 4000 wheelchairs within a two-year period.

“This has helped to change their lives qualitative, because someone who was on a bed, who wouldn’t move, their relatives could assist them, put them on a wheelchair and move them around. That makes a big difference. So, we are very happy to assist and we will continue assisting persons with disabilities who need things like wheelchairs. We also have been giving other assistive devices, some people might need a walker, some people might need a stick, these are things that we are able to provide at the ministry,” Minister Anthony said.

It was further explained that added to that, the Government has also been providing amputees with prosthesis free of cost while persons with hearing impairments are being supplied with hearing aids. Annually, approximately one thousand hearing aids are distributed locally.
