National Vaccination Task Force activated in preparation for COVID Vaccine

The Ministry of Health has activated a National Vaccination Task Force to prepare for the eventual acquisition and distribution of the coronavirus vaccines.

The move comes as the UK continues its administering of the vaccine and the United States is preparing to move in the similar direction.

Guyana is among 92 countries that will be accessing the coronavirus vaccines through the COVAX initiative, which is a body of organisations, including the World Health Organization, that will access the vaccines for developing nations.

“We have set up the National Vaccine Task Force. The Task Force really would be persons from the Ministry of Health and some other persons who would bring the kind of skills that we need…it would also have persons who are familiar with immunization and vaccine programmes”, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony revealed today.

The Health Minister noted that experts are also being sought to assist Guyana in its preparation for the vaccination drive once the vaccines become available to the country.

He noted that the government is looking to ensure that the vaccination team will be made up of essential persons which will ensure a smooth roll out of the vaccine.

Minister Anthony also said a draft plan for that roll out is being examined.

Guyana currently has 685 active coronavirus cases. The first case was recorded back in March and the number of cases has been climbing steadily ever since then. There were 32 new cases recorded as of midnight last night.
