The 172-room Four Points by Sheraton Georgetown Hotel opened its doors on Thursday at Houston, just off the Heroes Highway.
The hotel was built at a cost of US$30 Million, and is being seen as another major private investment in Guyana’s growing tourism and travel sector.
President Irfaan Ali said he is particularly pleased with the incorporation of various pieces of the Guyanese culture in the hotel’s decor.
He said the Government will continue to ensure systems are in place to attract major investors, explaining that the hotel industry has become critical to Guyana as the country continues to attract major regional and international events.
He said this year alone Guyana will host 11 conferences and six major sporting events and activities.

“We are now positioning Guyana to be a premier hosting destination because we now have greater capacity and capability,” he said. “And the confidence of the private sector is igniting greater confidence at the policy level to the extent that we are going after larger opportunities.”
He said hotels should not been seen as stand alone investments, since they create jobs far beyond their doors.
“That is why we are investing in the National School of Hospitality, spending tremendous resources to bring that school alive very soon,” the president affirmed. “A hotel is not stand-alone. It depends on agriculture, fisheries, transport, entertainment, construction, finance, security, technology, laundry services, maintenance, and retail.”
Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister, Susan Rodrigues also welcomed the opening of the new hotel. She said as Guyana continues to see a growing number of visitors, more accommodation is welcomed.
Minister Rodrigues noted that branded hotels like the Four Points by Sheraton, are ensuring Guyana is better known as a tourist destination and a host venue.

The Owner of Four Points by Sheraton Georgetown, Mauricio Van Dam, said he was pleased to invest in Guyana as the country develops and grows. He said he will be looking at other forms of investment.
Hundreds of Guyanese were hired during the construction stages of the hotel and several others have now been hired as permanent staffers.
The hotel’s amenities include pools, lawn tennis courts, gyms and restaurants.
