Police Commissioner Leslie James has announced that he will soon announce a new head of the Special Organised Crime Unit of the Guyana Police Force.
The announcement could come within the next 24 hours.
Assistant Police Commissioner Sydney James who headed the unit, was recently sent on leave in wake of the scathing findings of a probe into the management of the unit.
That probe unearthed several issues surrounding the management of operational funds of the unit.
While the Police Commissioner has not offered any insight into the findings of the probe, the Public Security Minister has raised concerns of his own and has said that the findings were damning.
A decision was taken by the Top Cop to send the Head of the Unit in leave and from all appearances now, he will not be returning to the Unit.
SOCU has a number of cases before the Court related to fraud, money laundering and even the sale and purchase of government lands by former government ministers.
The Unit is also involved in a number of other high profile investigations.
