Former Head of SOCU wanted by SOCU for questioning about fraud

The Guyana Police Force’s Special Organised Crime Unit has issued a wanted bulletin for the former head of the unit, Sydney James.

In a statement, the Police Force said James of Lamaha Springs, Georgetown is wanted for questioning in relation to allegations of fraud and obtaining money by pretense.

Details surrounding the allegations were not released by the Police.

James who was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Guyana Defence Force was appointed an Assistant Police Commissioner in 2014 under the former PPP Civic Government and transferred to head the new Special Organised Crime Unit.

He remained as Head of the Unit up until 2019 when his contract was not renewed under the APNU+AFC administration.

Just before the decision was made not to renew his contract, he was sent on administrative leave after a special audit unearthed a number of instances of mismanagement of funds and falsification of documents at the Special Organised Crime Unit.
