Nine children were taken to the hospital last night after suffering from smoke inhalation from a fire that ripped through the Children’s Home at Plum Park in Sophia.

The Fire Service responded promptly to the blaze last evening and was able to contain the fire to the one building.

The Ministry of Human Services in a statement confirmed that all of the children who were housed at the Children Home were evacuated and accounted for, with those needing medical attention taken to the Georgetown Hospital. The others have been moved to another facility.

A cause of the fire is still to be determined. The incident occurred last evening just after 7:30pm.

The Ministry of Human Services said the safety, health and welfare of the children remain its immediate priority and it is grateful to the Guyana Fire Service and others who responded to the emergency and assisted with the evacuation of the children.

A full investigation has been launched.
