Nine Guyanese Doctors in the fields of ophthalmology, pathology, nephrology, orthopedics, anesthesia, obstetrics, gynecology, and plastic and general surgery will soon travel to China to undergo three months of clinical and technical training in their areas of specialty.
The Doctors – Carla Ageday, Rolan Persaud, Obadele Thorne, Ranvir Gajraj, Randell Collins, Tiffany Fiedtkou-Collins, La Toya Shury-Reid, Joseph Torress and Shazad Hussain – will participate in the three month exchange programme at the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, starting September 12.
All of the Doctors are currently attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC)
The exchange is being facilitated by the Ministry of Health through the Georgetown Public Hospital and the Chinese Government, with support from the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Georgetown Hospital, Robbie Rambarran, said the group represents the third cohort of Guyanese Doctors to undergo training under the current partnership.
“Allow me to thank CNOOC, the People’s Republic of China for affording our doctors this opportunity where they can go and train, a form of capacity building, and obviously, this will impact the healthcare delivery to the people of Guyana, and not only the people of Guyana but those that come to our door,” the Hospital CEO said.
Mr. Rabarran said the public’s confidence in the hospital is being enhanced through partnerships such as those involving China.
China’s Ambassador to Guyana, Yang Yang said the exchange programme serves to strengthen China and Guyana’s partnership in the area of health.
“Last year, seven doctors completed their residency training in China successfully. Now, another nine doctors will follow their footsteps and further strengthen China-Guyana health cooperation. We hope that more medical professionals in Guyana with strong expertise, international outlook, and innovative spirit can be cultivated, thereby supporting the development of Guyana’s healthcare system in the long run,” Ambassador Yang Yang said.
The Chinese Ambassador explained that for decades, bilateral cooperation in the health sector has achieved fruitful results, with both countries reaping the benefits.
“Twenty-one batches of Chinese Medical Team with 313 doctors have served in Guyana with unwavering dedication. Six regional hospitals that greatly improve people’s welfare were constructed by Chinese companies. Chinese government is also committed to support Guyana’s public health development by donating medical supplies consistently,” Ambassador Yang Yang said.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Yang Yang said China stands ready to work with Guyana to enhance cooperation in health, particularly in the areas of human resource development and technology, with the aim of addressing public health challenges.
Meanwhile, CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited Representative, Bayney Karran said the company is pleased to support the collaborative initiative which will see Guyanese Doctors receiving advanced medical training.
The Doctors are expected to complete their training by December 15.
