The month of May which was the deadliest month for the COVID-19 pandemic in Guyana ended with 92 recorded COVID-19 related deaths. News Source understands that other deaths that occurred during the month are still being probed for the possibility of them being COVID-19 related.
Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony said it is important now more than ever for persons to get vaccinated as the country is seeing an increase in new cases. Appearing on the Jumpstart Morning show, Dr. Anthony said no one who has been fully immunized against COVID is among the deaths.
“What is important for people to understand is that everyone who has received their second dose vaccine, meaning they are now fully immunized, we have not seen persons getting the infection, we have not seen people who have both doses coming in to the hospital and if they don’t come into the hospital, obviously they are not going to be in the ICU and it has prevented deaths. Those persons who have been fully immunized, nobody has died from COVID. So in the context where we are seeing increased cases and deaths, one sure way of preventing all of this is through vaccination”, the Health Minister revealed.
Today, the Ministry of Health announced that over 200,000 persons have now received a first dose of one of the Coronavirus vaccines. Additional vaccines are being procured to support the Government’s vaccination drive.
The month of May saw the highest number of new infections since the first case of the pandemic was recorded in March 2020.
Health officials remain worried that the number of new infections continues to rise, especially among the youth population which continues to be the group most affected by infections.
The Health Minister said he would like to see more youths getting the vaccine and protecting themselves against the virus.
