Senior Minister responsible for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh is assuring that systems will be put in place in the distribution of the $100,000 cash grant to cater for persons who may not have a bank account, or who prefer for their payment not to be made to their bank account.
While the Government prefers for the payments to be made to bank accounts, Dr. Singh said having a bank account is not a criteria to be given the grant.
“Nobody will be denied their cash grant on account that they do not have a bank account. If you do not have a bank account in the first instance, we encourage you to have a bank account. But if you decide that you do not want to have a bank account, or for some other reason you don’t want the cash grant paid into your bank account, we will work out an arrangement and devise a mechanism for you to get your cash grant, so you do not need to worry and I want to put that issue rest”, Dr. Singh said.
On Thursday, the Government launched the online portal for registration for the cash grant, allowing persons to provide their banking information for the cash grant to be paid directly to their bank account. The online portal has faced some technical issues with growing complaints. However, the Finance Minister said those issues were caused by the heavy traffic to the website. He said there is nothing to worry about and persons can revisit the website at their convenience to get registered.
“Please don’t panic and please don’t worry. The website, the portal is not going anywhere. It is not going to close off tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, it will remain open. If you were unable to complete your registration today, you can try again later tonight or you can try again later tomorrow when the traffic has subsided a little bit, or the day after”, he said.
