Norton maintains support for confirmation of Justices Cummings and George to top judicial posts

Almost a year since he wrote to the President indicating that he would be fully supportive of the substantive appointments of Justice Yonette Cummings as Chancellor of the Judiciary and Justice Roxanne George as Chief Justice, Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton today said he remains supportive of those appointments.

The President has been facing calls for the appointments to the top judicial posts to be made, but he has not put forward any nomination to the two positions and is still to appoint a Judicial Service Commission.

Today, the Opposition Leader responded to claims by the Vice President that the Opposition was in the way of the judicial appointments.

Mr. Norton said he is on record as writing to the President and offering his full support to the confirmation of the two Judges who have been acting in the two top positions.

The Constitution requires the President to make nominations for the position and get agreement from the Opposition Leader on the nominations for them to move forward. The President has not made any nominations as yet.

“Mr. Jagdeo must stop lying… It is clear that i have indicated since May of last year that I am prepared to agree to the appointment of Justice Yonette Cummings as Chancellor and Justice Roxanne George as Chief Justice, it is therefore disingenuous for Bharrat Jagdeo to suggest that I am standing in the way”, Norton said.

Guyana has not had confirmed holders of the top judicial posts in over two decades.
