A Lance Corporal in the Guyana Defence Force and three other men could face serious gun possession charges in the new week after they were nabbed in a car on Saturday morning with illegal guns and ammunition.
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force, just after 10:30 Saturday morning, police ranks who are part of the nationwide anti crime campaign, “Operation Dragnet”, stopped a motor vehicle which had obscure number plates.
The stop was made in the busy downtown area of Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic.
The ranks conducted a search of the vehicle and found “an unlicensed sawn-off pump action shotgun and an unlicensed .38 revolver with six matching rounds were found.”
The release said the vehicle was being driven by the Lance Corporal of the Guyana Defence Force who was dressed in uniform and a hood. The soldier and the three other men who were in the vehicle have been arrested and are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
On Friday, the police also nabbed three suspected bandits moments after a robbery at the AH&L Kissoon outlet on Main Street.
The government earlier this week announced a major offensive to terrorism threats and the crime problem in the country through a joint services operation named “Operation Dragnet”.
The President who ordered the move, said it will be focused on security at Guyana’s borders as well as all across the country.
