The Yarrowkabra Secondary School, which is located along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, was commissioned on Thursday with a pledge by the Government to continue its support of universal secondary education.
The new school is expected to house over one thousand students from the Soesdyke area and other surrounding communities.
The school was built at a cost of more than $800 million.
At the Commissioning of the school today, President Irfaan Ali said his government wants every child to be allowed access to a secondary education.
It was explained that the government has embarked on a deliberate effort to build more secondary schools across the country. Currently, there are 26 secondary schools being built.
“By emphasising universal secondary education, we are cultivating a larger pool of students better prepared to meet the demands of a modernizing economy. Our education focus extends beyond traditional subjects. Secondary education must instil a robust foundation in entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity and problem solving,” the President noted.
The President also pledged the government’s continued support for teachers. He said the goal of the government is not only to build schools, but to ensure that teachers get the right skills and training to deliver quality education.
“And as we continue to invest and build these facilities and look at the comprehensive life of our teachers, education system and our students, we will make the necessary changes, bringing the innovation, bringing the creativity and enhance the system so that the end product will continue to improve,” the President said.
The Education Ministry also has plans to expand technical and vocational centers across the country for students who are more versed in those areas.
“We are committed to establishing high quality education institutions in local communities, ensuring every child can access a top-class education without the need distant journeys. This transformative shift aims to providing families the assurance that proximity to home to does equate to compromise in education standards,” the President said.
Meanwhile Education Minister Priya Manickhand said the new Yarrowkabra secondary will ease the burden on a number of schools, and will also add to an improvement of the quality of education to be offered.
