Over 465 pounds of cocaine found in North West District; Five suspects in custody

Police in Region One have arrested five Guyanese nationals following the discovery of 465 pounds of cocaine in the Imbotero area, Barima River in the North West District.

In a statement this afternoon, the Guyana Police Force said the bust took place on Tuesday during an intelligence led operation in the area.

According to the Police, a senior Police Officer and other ranks carried out a raid at the residence and fuel bond of Anthony Hosea Beria aka Anthony Hosea Yispen, and during that raid they seized 11 cellular phones and three handheld radio sets. There were no narcotics found at the locations, however, a suspect fled the scene moments before the raid.

The Police said its subsequent investigations led to the arrest of four individuals and the four directed the Police to separate locations along Imbotero Creek, where several bags containing the cocaine were found stashed.

A fisherman led the Police to one salt bag containing 20 parcels of a creamish, rock-like substance weighing 23.5 kilograms, and that turned out to be cocaine.

A farmer in the area led ranks to two more salt bags containing 40 parcels of cocaine weighing 47 kilograms, while another farmer led the Police to three salt bags containing a total of 60 parcels of cocaine weighing 70.6 kilograms.

Additionally, the Police were led by an unemployed man to another three salt bags of cocaine weighing a total of 70.6 kilograms.

The Police said each of the suspects were arrested, cautioned and placed into custody. Their names have been given as Marlon Jerome, Anthony Lewis, Patrick Sam and Leroy Williams.

The primary suspect,Anthony Hosea Beria, was later arrested and is currently in custody assisting with the investigations.

The seized cocaine has a street value of $317.5 million.
