
The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has granted approval for some 46 political parties, voluntary groups and individuals to contest the upcoming Local Government Elections.
In accordance with the Local Authorities (Elections) Act, the Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Vishnu Persaud, has notified the parties, voluntary groups and individuals that their titles, symbols and candidates have been approved for the June 12 Local Elections.
For many of the Local Authority Areas, the APNU and the PPP will be contesting in both the First-Past-the-Post and Proportional Representation components of the elections.
The two major parties will be going head-to-head in a number of municipal races.
However, a number of voluntary groups and individuals are also hoping to secure seats on the Councils in their Local Authority Areas.
Local Government Elections were last held in 2018.
