An investigation has been launched into the safety of a mining area in the North West Community after a mining pit caved and killed a young miner.
The dead man has been identified as 33-year-old Seckou Adams of Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara. Reports state that the incident occurred just after 2 o’ clock on Saturday afternoon while Adams was working in a pit at Warrenbu, North West District. He was buried alive.
His body was eventually pulled from the pit. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted this week.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Guyana Geology and Mining Commission have been stepping up their monitoring of several mining areas across the country. There have been a number of mining pit accidents reported for this year. A full investigation is underway.
