Plain clothes police officer shot by policeman who mistook him for bandit
A Police Constable is nursing wounds to his right hand and right leg after he was mistakenly shot by another police rank who thought that he may have been a criminal.
Police Constable Leroy English was taken to a City Hospital after being shot by the other rank just after 12:30 on Wednesday afternoon.
According to reports, Police Constable English who was dressed in plain clothes, was walking along the East Bank of Demerara in the Eccles area, with his service weapon, when the other rank who was also dressed in “plain clothes” and was closely behind, noticed the firearm and opened fire on his colleague without any warning.
“He jumped  out of his vehicle, took a position and opened fire on the constable”, a senior police source told News Source.
The Policeman did not realise the man he shot was also a policeman until the constable fell to the ground and identified himself.
According to Police sources, the rank who fired the shots told investigators that when he spotted the man walking with the firearm on his waist, he was convinced he was a “bandit on the move”.
The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation into the incident. The trigger happy cop is in custody.
