PNCR Central Executive backs Norton’s leadership of party

Still reeling from its devastating defeat at the September 1 elections, the People’s National Congress Reform through its Executive, is sticking with Aubrey Norton as the Party Leader.

There have been calls by some party members for Norton to step down ahead of the party’s next internal elections, which are due in 2026.

In a statement last evening, the Central Executive Committee of the party expressed confidence in Mr. Norton to continue serving as party leader until the next congress and elections.

The CEC met last evening for the first time since the General and Regional Elections.

While the party’s statement did not address its poor electoral performance or offer any insight on the post-election diagnosis, the Central Executive defended the party leader, even after he led the party to its worst electoral defeat in its more than sixty year history.

“The CEC reaffirmed its complete confidence in the leadership of Aubrey C. Norton and supports his continued role as the Leader of the PNCR during the rebuilding process. The Committee emphasized that its Leader can only be removed at a duly convened Party Congress, in accordance with the Party’s constitution,” the party said in a statement.

The Central Committee also rejected reports that there is trouble within the party’s camp and assured the party’s membership that public grievances by a few persons will not defeat the party’s reactivation of political will and resilience.

The CEC said it also reviewed the party’s strategic direction and immediate courses of action.

During the meeting, it said a number of other developments were raised including the recent resignation of two CEC members. The party said two persons were elevated to the CEC to replace the resignations, although it did not name the two.

The PNCR said it remains committed to strengthening its organisational structure, engaging in community outreach to strengthen its membership, in pursuit of its fearless aspiration for the growth of the Guyanese people.

Several prominent members of the party including a number of former Members of Parliament, left the party just before the September elections, with a few others departing Congress Place just after the elections.
