Police arrest Celina Resort construction workers as company ignores Government’s cease work order

Four construction workers attached to the Celina’s Atlantic Resort were arrested today as the owners of the resort continued to ignore a cease order from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.

The Ministry filed a formal complaint today and the four workers were taken in to custody after police officers visited the Kitty seawall site this afternoon.

In a statement, the Ministry said  lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over the construction work underway at the resort.

The Ministry has been expressing concern with the ongoing construction due to the risk it poses to sea defence. The resort is located on the Kitty foreshore behind the seawalls.

“After MPI sought assistance in the matter today, the police’s legal advisor was contacted and informed of the situation. In turn, advice was given that the police may proceed to prosecute CAR under the Sea Defence Act”, The Ministry of Infrastructure noted.

The police investigators visited the site just after 4:30pm today where they observed the employees still continuing constuction work.

The Guyana Police Force has been launched an investigation into “the extensive and detrimental work” undertaken by the resort company.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, applauded the response of the police and said “I must commend the police for doing their job”.

He said the Ministry takes the protection of the sea defence and the preservation of our protection extremely seriously and will continue to monitor the situation.

The workers are expected to be released on station bail this evening.
