Tasked with investigating a drug bust matter, a Police Detective Sergeant has found himself before the Courts being accused of stealing more than three thousand grams of marijuana.
Police Detective Sergeant Elfannando Newman of the Criminal Investigations Department was marched before the Diamond Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where the charge of larceny by a public officer was laid against him by the Special Organised Crime Unit.
The alleged larceny dates back to February of 2021 when the Police were involved in a drug bust along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
The Police found a large quantity of marijuana in a car and the occupants of the car were arrested and taken to the Timehri Police station after the arresting ranks turned down an alleged $2 million bribe offer.
At the Timehri station, the suspects and the marijuana were reportedly handed over to the Police Sergeant.
SOCU is claiming that Sergeant Newman never lodged the marijuana that was handed over to him and is alleged to have stolen it. The marijuana was discovered missing six months after the bust.
In Court on Wednesday, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $100,000. He will make his next Court appearance in July.
