Political activist convicted of fraud still to begin 9-month prison sentence

More than two weeks since he was found guilty of fraud and sentenced to nine months in jail, political activist for the governing People’s Progressive Party in Linden, Kevon Lorrimer is still to begin his sentencing.

The sentence was handed down against Lorrimer in his absence, however, he was taken into custody by the Police in Linden on Monday. Since then, Lorrimer has remained in the custody of the Police in Linden. He is now likely to be handed over to the Prison Authorities by tomorrow, Police sources have said.

News Source understands that there might have been some political maneuvering to delay Lorrimer’s handover to the prison authorities to begin his 9 month jail sentence. Senior Police officials could not explain the reason behind the delay. Calls to the Commissioner of Police went unanswered.

Retired Assistant Police Commissioner and former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Paul Slowe, raised concern over the issue in a social media post.

Mr. Slowe said once a commitment warrant is issued by the Court, the person named must be handed over to the prison authorities to begin serving the time stated in the warrant. He said no government official or senior police officer can change that, and he believes the delay in the hand over of Lorrimer is evidence of corruption.

Kevon Lorrimer was charged with the offense of Obtaining by False Pretense on the 3rd February 2025. The matter was fixed for trial on the 19th June 2025 @ the Linden Magistrate’s Court.

Following the non-appearance of the defendant, the Court proceeded with the trial and at its conclusion, Lorrimer was found guilty and sentenced to 9 months in jail.
