PPP adopts motion in full support of Guyana’s position in border case against Venezuela

The People’s Progressive Party has adopted a resolution supporting the stance of the country on the border controversy with neighboring Venezuela.

During the discussions at the party’s recent 32nd Congress, the PPP recommitted itself to the case that Guyana has filed against Venezuela at the International Court.

The governing party said the government must use any means necessary to defend the country against threats from Venezuela.

Over the last six months, Venezuela has increased its threats against Guyana as it continues its claim of Guyana’s Essequibo region.

Recently, Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro signed a law which incorporated the Essequibo region as a new Venezuelan state. Guyana has sternly rejected the move.

“We recommitted ourselves to the ICJ process as the only pathway to the final resolution of this matter. The controversy between the two countries arising from their claim, that the 1899 award was flawed. We also committed our full support to the government and we said to the government, that they must defend our country by any means whatsoever—diplomatic or any other means whatsoever,” Mr. Jagdeo communicated to the media at the closing of the party’s congress.

PPP General Secretary, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said the party also reflected on having a good working relationship with Caracas, but such a relationship must not be at the expense of the country’s territorial integrity.

“And we also recognized that we wanted to promote good neighborly relationship with Venezuela, but we are uncompromising on the question of this border and the threats to our territorial integrity and sovereignty,” Mr. Jagdeo stated.

The PPP also hailed the country’s international partners who have been standing with Guyana against Venezuela’s threats.
