The opposition People’s Progressive Party late Wednesday evening issued a statement denying its involvement or that of any of its members in the March 10 shooting death of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing.
The PPP’s statement comes in wake of statements by former murder accused and self confessed member of the former death squad Sean Hinds, in which he distanced himself from the murder which police investigators have disclosed new leads have developed.
Hinds on Tuesday said he believes that two activists of the now opposition People’s Progressive Party ought to be questioned.
But the PPP said it rejects what it said were “vile” attempts to link it with the killing.
“The PPP/C calls on the Guyana Police Force to disclose the results of their investigations into the murder. The PPP is confident that this disclosure will exonerate the PPP/C fully,” the statement added.
According to the party, Hinds’ statement is merely a plot by the APNU/AFC Government. Hinds, who was a former bodyguard for now sacked Town Clerk, Carol Sooba and leading figures in the PPP said he was forced to seek refuge at the party headquarters on Robb Street on Tuesday after he noticed a heavily tinted vehicle close to his home.
He said he was surprised with the demeanor of a well known PPP activist who served in the previous government, after he related his worry to the man.
Hinds also said he is convinced that another activist for the PPP may have passed the money for Crum-Ewing’s execution. He identified that activist as a well known businessman who owns a tv station that is unapologetically supportive of the PPP and carries a number of talk shows for the party.
But in its rebuttal to Hinds’ claims, the PPP said “It is apposite to note that at no time did Shawn Hinds mention Ministerial involvement. The plot involving Shawn Hinds incriminating PPP/C Ministers and Members must be exposed for what it is, designed by the Granger-Government to tarnish the image of the PPP with accusations of murder and directing the investigations to prove PPP/C involvement.”
Hinds who never hid his support for the PPP, was spotted at all of the major rallies of the party during the just concluded elections. He said he has no fear of going to the police but he is tired of taking the blame for murders and other crimes that he claims he has no knowledge of.
