President Irfaan Ali has touted a fully digital Policing system, explaining that the Government’s e-ticketing traffic system has been reaping successes.
The President announced that other Policing work will go fully digital, starting with the demerit points system, which will be integrated into the e-ticketing system.
The demerit point system for driver’s license is a system to track traffic violations and potentially suspend driving privileges, based on accumulated points.
Addressing the opening of the Police Officer’s Conference this morning, the President said lawlessness on the country’s roadways cannot continue, and legislative changes are now being looked at to streamline the new system.
“The points demeriting system will be integrated in the e-ticketing system, we don’t have to wait and the amendments would speak to this, how the demerit system would work, how it is integrated in the e-ticketing systems, how its integrated into persons who don’t pay their tickets and the different tiers of suspension for your license, we have to do this our life matters,” the President said.
Guyana recorded more than 135 road deaths last year, and this year has already seen several tragic fatal accidents on the country’s roads.

The President told Officers that other processes such as the issuing of writs and warrants must also be digital as part of the full technological advancement on the Police Force.
“Therefore, I have asked the Minister to look at the legislative amendments that are necessary to ensure an electric form throughout the process like e-ticketing, e-prosecution, but importantly the writs and warrants and everything that has to be presented in court, all of this must be on electric platform, it is the only way we can achieve and celebrate of the technology,” the President said.
He said discussions will also be held with the judiciary to see how the new system will be integrated with their system and how it can help with legislative changes.
“We are going to move into an e-filing system and e-case management system. The system would tell us, who goes into the system, when they go into the system, when the exit the system, who update files, we don’t have to wait anymore for somebody to come somewhere to bring a statement to go to the court, technology is here and would be utilized optimally in the Guyana Police Force,” the President noted.

The President suggested an e-case management system for the Guyana Police Force, which he said will address the question of missing files.
It was also announced that there will also be an e-bordering system to monitor movement at the country’s borders.
