Prime suspect in teacher’s disappearance shot dead by police during shootout

The Guyana Police Force reported on Friday evening that the prime suspect in the disappearance of school teacher Nyozi Goodman was shot dead by police during a shootout in the Kitty area.

The dead man has been identified as 38-year-old Royston Waldron of Public Road, Kitty. He had been questioned several times about the disappearance of Goodman and another woman, police constable Patriena Nicholson. It is believed that the man may have been romantically involved with both women who have disappeared without a trace, are presumed dead.

But his death on Friday afternoon was as a result of the police receiving information about three suspicious men driving around the Kitty area in a motor car. According to a Police report, when officers intercepted the motor car, they were greeted with gunfire and were forced to return fire and it was during the shoot out that Waldron was shot dead.

“At about 1215h. today Friday November 14, 2014, police ranks intercepted a motor car at Alexander and Thomas Streets, Kitty, Georgetown, with three men who were wanted for questioning in connection with a number of armed robberies and during which gunfire was opened on the police. The police returned fire hitting Royston Waldron, 38 years, of Public Road, Kitty, from whom an unlicensed .32 pistol with 4 rounds and a spent shell was recovered. He was taken to the GPHC where he succumbed while receiving medical treatment”, the police report said.

The other two men who were in the vehicle with Waldron have been arrested and remain in custody. Waldron was known to law enforcement and had been charged and convicted for robbery under arms.

He also emerged as the lead suspect when school teacher Nyozi Goodman went missing back in July. It is believed that he was dating the teacher at the time. Another woman that he dated had also vanished without a trace. She was a police constable.

The remains of a woman’s body was found a few weeks after Goodman’s disappearance in the Turkeyen area. DNA tests have been completed in Trinidad on the remains but the results have not been uplifted as yet by local police.
