PSC wants national holiday to enjoy CPL match; Not all members supportive

The Private Sector Commission in a statement this morning issued a call on the government to declare Tuesday, September 27, 2022, a National Holiday because of a knockout cricket matching involving the Guyana Amazon warriors.

“With the Guyana Amazon Warriors slated to play against Barbados Royals at 10:00 hours followed by St. Lucia Kings playing against Jamaica Tallawahs at 19:00 hours, the traffic situation on the country’s roadways will be chaotic for those working and attending school,” the PSC said in the statement.

The Commission said it believes that every Guyanese should have a chance to participate in the matches given the consistent wins made by the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the previously played matches.

Guyana has won all four of its home games, and has advanced to the second place on the CPL points table. The team has now advanced to the play off round of the competition and has opportunity to secure a spot in the final of this year’s tournament.

Prior to the Guyana leg of the competition, Guyana was bottom of the CPL points table.

The PSC said also that it is cognizant of the large influx of tourists who have arrived in the country for Cricket Carnival and the positive impact this will have on businesses in the entertainment industry and therefore a national holiday will be a welcomed initiative.

But not all members of the PSC are onboard the call.

Some PSC members have written to the Commission’s head complaining that there were no consultation within the organisation before the call was made.

One senior member said the call for a holiday is “ill-advised” and without merit, adding that the PSC needs to represent and not hinder business.
